Gerald Edward Rush, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and friend, peacefully transitioned from this life at the age of 56. Born on June 22, 1969, at Catherine Booth Memorial Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio, Gerald was the cherished son of the late Dewitt Rush and Joan V. Colbert.
Gerald was raised and educated in the Birmingham School System in Birmingham, Alabama, where he developed the foundation for a life marked by strength, dedication, and quiet resilience. He later lived in both Birmingham, Alabama, and Locust Grove, Georgia, leaving a lasting impression on all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A proud servant of his country, Gerald honorably served in the United States Navy as an Aviation Boatswain Mate. His time in service reflected his discipline, courage, and commitment—qualities that continued to define his life long after his military years.
Gerald was a hardworking and skilled man, earning certifications as a welder and forklift driver. Known affectionately as a “plant doctor,” he had a special gift for bringing life to plants, nurturing them with care and patience. His love for cooking brought family and friends together, often filling rooms with warmth, laughter, and the aroma of home-cooked meals.
He was a devoted sports fan, proudly cheering “Roll Tide” for the University of Alabama and standing faithfully with his Dallas Cowboys. Beyond his passions, Gerald will be remembered most for his laid-back spirit, his incredible sense of humor, and his ability to make others feel at ease in his presence.
Gerald leaves to cherish his loving memory his devoted wife, Cheryl Rush; his children, Courtney Lowe (bonus daughter), Cheryl Whitaker, Jasmine Hatch (bonus daughter), and Nadia Backay; and his sons-in-law, Dawuan Lowe and Tariq Williams. He was preceded in death by his bonus son, Roderick Moore Jr.
He was a proud and loving grandfather to Emauel Johnson, Elijah Johnson, Armonie Holmes, Zy’Keria Whitaker, Ariana Moore, Naomi Moore, Montana Moore, and Journey Williams, each of whom brought him immense joy and pride.
Gerald is survived by his mother, Joan Rush-Jackson, and his bonus father, Orlando Jackson. He also leaves behind his siblings, Clarence D. Rush and Gina M. Rush, along with a host of extended family members, dear friends, and loved ones who will forever hold him in their hearts.
Gerald Edward Rush lived a life defined by love, laughter, service, and strength. His legacy will continue to live on through the lives he touched, the lessons he shared, and the love he gave so freely.
“Well done, good and faithful servant.”
